NOTIZIARIO DI CIPRO NORD

Giovedì, Maggio 10, 2012 n. 73
LEFKOSA - Ufficio di Promozione e Informazione
Ente del ministero Esteri di Cipro Nord

PRESIDENT EROGLU: “WHILE THE UN RECONGIZED SOME COUNTRIES’ INDEPENDENCE, UNFORTUNATELY IT PREVENTED OURS”
President Dervis Eroglu said: “While the UN accepted some countries’ independence with pleasure, unfortunately it prevented ours. If it didn’t prevent our independence, we would be recognized by many countries, besides Turkey”.
Speaking during a meeting yesterday President Eroglu reminded that the Turkish Cypriot people had established the Turkish Cypriot Federated State after 1974 Peace Operation and because the Greek Cypriots did not have intention towards a settlement and the UN adopted decisions against the Turkish Cypriots they established the TRNC.
Explaining that the Turkish Cypriot side was continuing the negotiations despite the Greek Cypriot side’s intransigence Eroglu drew attention to the fact that the UN did not question until when the negotiations would continue.
Stressing that if the negotiations continue in an open ended manner, it would not be possible to reach a settlement Eroglu said whether a settlement could be achieved or not would be understood if a time-limit was set in the negotiations.
Continuing President Eroglu said:
“We are both under embargoes and at the negotiation table; but the Greek Cypriot side is both a member of the UN and of the EU. Under these conditions, it is normal for the Greek Cypriot side to play for time. It has always been the Greek Cypriot side which rejected all the settlement proposals, but I cannot say that they were blamed for this. It was also the Greek Cypriots which created the Cyprus problem and is preventing its solution, but today the EU can say to Turkey to solve the Cyprus problem for EU membership. Their aim is not to accept Turkey to EU membership, not the solution of the Cyprus problem.
Stating that although the Turkish Cypriot side was not guilty, it was subjected to embargoes, Eroglu said this was a shame of humanity and the EU was responsible for this and expressed hope that the international community in particular the EU would correct their mistakes. Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot side was continuing the negotiations by taking into consideration the interests of Turkish Cypriots and Turkey Eroglu said a settlement to be achieved should take into account the existing realities in the island and not bring back the pre-1974 period. President added that only then a settlement could be permanent and sustainable, if not the Turkish Cypriots were not helpless and Motherland Turkey was by their side.

ERTUG :  THE FUTURE    OF  THE PROCESS  IS  DISCUSSED  AT THE   SHUTTLE  DIPLOMACY   CONTINUING  UNDER  THE  SUPERVISION  OF   UN
Spokesman   of  the  Presidency, Osman Ertuð   stressed that as expressed clearly by the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser   to  Cyprus  Alexander  Downer  on  27 April  2012  at his press  conference, the  future of  the  process  is being discussed  at   the  shuttle diplomacy continued  already  under  the supervision of UN.
In a  written statement  Ertuð  drew  attention to the  ambigious  and   misleading  news  on   the negotiation process   taking   place in the Greek  Cypriot  press  since  last week.
Noting that within the framework of  the  shuttle diplomacy carried out   by the UN,  the possibility of a common will towards  the future of the process between two sides  in the context of  Cypriot process  was  discussed, Ertuð said  the contents  of the subjects  would  be  discussed  after  a  consensus   come out   over  the future of the process and the method of negotiation.
Announcing  Predisent Dervis Eroglu’s   meeting with Special  Adviser Downer on 16 May in his statement , Ertuð  noted that the  point  reached  over  the  Cyprus  issue  would  be  discussed with  Downer   in detail,  the continued  shuttle diplomacy  would  be  evaluated  and  the  big  picture  over the futue of the process  would  be portrayed   more  clearly.
